Well, the truth is that the relationship between mining and dinosaurs is very direct since dinosaurs disappeared more than 65 million years ago, a period in which lignite was formed and the Pyrenees were created, which had previously been a river plain. That is why it is not surprising that between 1975 and 1986 an impressive paleontological site with more than 3,500 dinosaur footprints over 65 million years old was discovered in Fumanya .
At the Fumanya Dinosaur Interpretation Center , located a 10-minute drive from El Jou Nature, you will discover everything related to the dinosaurs that inhabited this area of the Pyrenees more than 65 million years ago in a very visual and entertaining way. through explanatory panels, projections and 3 exhibitions of geology, paleontology and mining. Throughout the visit, users will see how the footprints were discovered and learn about the habitat of the dinosaurs and how they became extinct.
On the lower floor of the center, children will learn a lot and have fun on the interactive screens where they can imagine their beloved and feared dinosaurs walking together.
The Fumanya deposit, in the municipal area of Fígols, was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN) in 2014 , so if you go through the region it is an essential visit.
Why is the Fumanya deposit important?
Fumanya is the only center in the Spanish State located in a field. It highlights the 3,500 footprint fossils, fossils of animals such as dinosaurs, crocodiles, turtles and remains of marine fauna, as well as plant fossils such as palm leaves, trunks, dinosaur eggs or a fossilized skin of the tyrannosaurus, discovered in 2015.
